Queenslanders are full of character and full of surprises. Here’s what to plan for when renovating a classic timber home.

Queenslanders are some of Brisbane’s most loved homes. Renovating one is rewarding, but older timber homes need a different approach to a modern brick build.

Check the character rules

Many Queenslanders sit in character or heritage overlays. Changes to the street-facing look, demolition and some extensions can need council approval. Find this out before you design.

Expect what’s behind the walls

  • Old or undersized stumps and floor framing
  • Termite damage in hidden timbers
  • Outdated wiring and galvanised plumbing
  • Asbestos in older linings, particularly in wet areas and eaves

Allow a contingency, and choose a builder experienced with timber homes who can tell you early what they find.

Keep the character, add the comfort

The best Queenslander renovations keep VJ walls, timber floors, high ceilings and verandahs, and pair them with modern kitchens and bathrooms. Our Morningside project is a good example: a deep green exterior, sandstone fireplace with arched joinery and a warm, earthy bathroom.

Thinking of building underneath?

Raising and building in underneath is one of the most popular ways to add space to a Queenslander. Read our guide to house raising, or book a free onsite inspection to talk it through.
